How a payment gateway connects the operator to banks and wallets
The payment stack in iGaming is a multi-layered infrastructure connecting players' funds to operator accounts through a series of intermediaries. At the front end, players interact with the cashier—the user interface for deposits and withdrawals. Behind this lies the payment gateway, which routes transactions to appropriate processors based on method, currency, and jurisdiction.
The gateway serves as the orchestration layer, managing connections to multiple Payment Service Providers (PSPs), banks, e-wallets, and alternative payment methods. It handles transaction routing logic, currency conversion, and provides a unified API for the operator's platform. This abstraction layer allows operators to add or remove payment methods without rebuilding their core systems.
Below the gateway sit the actual acquirers and processors who move money. Card transactions flow through acquiring banks to card networks (Visa, Mastercard). Bank transfers utilise local clearing systems. E-wallets maintain their own ledgers. Each pathway has distinct characteristics, costs, and risks that the gateway layer must manage intelligently.
