Designing the volatility, hit rate, and max exposure profile
Every casino game begins with its math model—the statistical framework defining how the game behaves over millions of spins or hands. The math model determines Return to Player (RTP), volatility, hit frequency, maximum exposure, and the distribution of wins. This model must be designed, balanced, and certified before visual development begins.
Key parameters include: RTP (typically 94-97% for slots), volatility profile (how wins distribute between frequent small pays and rare large wins), hit frequency (percentage of spins returning something), and maximum exposure (the largest possible win multiplier). These parameters interact—high volatility often means lower hit frequency but larger potential wins.
Math design is both art and science. Pure mathematical optimisation doesn't guarantee player engagement; games need satisfying win patterns, meaningful bonus triggers, and exciting maximum win potential. Experienced math designers understand player psychology—what feels rewarding, what creates anticipation, and what keeps players engaged over time.
