Bookmaker Margin

Definition

The structural profit margin built into sportsbook odds. Synonymous with overround in single-event analysis.

Why it matters

Bookmaker margin is the foundation of sportsbook economics. By pricing every outcome of an event slightly tighter than true probability, the implied probabilities across all outcomes sum to more than 100%, and the excess is the bookmaker's structural margin. On a two-way market with no draw, a margin of 4% might price each side at around 1.92 in decimal odds rather than the fair 2.00. Across enough matched volume, that 4% is the operator's expected profit.

Margins compress in highly competitive markets and on high-profile events where pricing efficiency matters most. The biggest English Premier League matches and major US sports games often see margins of 3% to 5%; obscure markets and lower-volume sports run wider, sometimes substantially. In-play margins are typically wider than pre-match because the trading complexity is higher. Operators publishing low-margin pricing as a marketing claim has been a feature of the European market for years and is starting to influence US pricing dynamics.

Frequently asked questions

  • How does bookmaker margin relate to hold percentage?

Bookmaker margin is the theoretical built-in profit on every market. Hold percentage is the realized profit on actual bet activity, which can be higher or lower than theoretical depending on which outcomes won. Over enough volume, hold tends toward theoretical margin.

  • Are tighter margins always better for operators?

Not necessarily. Tighter margins attract more sophisticated players who are likelier to be break-even or profitable. Wider margins attract more recreational players who lose more reliably. Operators choose pricing strategy based on their target segment mix.
