Bankroll

Definition

The pool of money set aside specifically for betting or gaming, managed separately from everyday finances and staked in controlled units.

Why it matters

Bankroll management is the discipline that separates sustainable betting from gambling to ruin. The core idea is that stake size should be a fixed fraction of the pool rather than a reaction to recent results, so that a losing run cannot wipe the account out. Common approaches stake one to two per cent of the bankroll per bet, or size positions by perceived edge using a fractional Kelly criterion, which scales the stake to the size of the advantage.

The concept matters beyond strategy. Treating a bankroll as ring-fenced money, deposited deliberately and never topped up mid-session, is one of the practical behaviours that responsible-gambling tools are designed to support, which is why deposit limits map so directly onto it. Chasing losses is, in bankroll terms, simply abandoning the staking plan after a drawdown. Operators see the same variable from the other side as player value and lifetime deposit, and the divergence between those two perspectives is at the heart of most affordability debates.
