Massachusetts’ sports betting market showed strong year-on-year growth in July, although the monthly figures reflected a predictable seasonal dip due to a quieter summer sports calendar. According to data from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), taxable sports betting revenue for the month hit $48.0 million.
While this figure was down 22.7% from June, it represents a healthy 16.5% increase compared to July of last year. Total handle also showed strong annual growth, rising 18.9% to $489.5 million. This dual trend suggests a market that is maturing and settling into a typical seasonal rhythm while maintaining a robust long-term growth trajectory.
The DraftKings Dominance
The story of the Massachusetts market continues to be one of overwhelming dominance by its home-state operator. Boston-based DraftKings once again captured the lion’s share of the market, generating $24.3 million in revenue from $238.9 million in handle. Its revenue alone accounted for over 50% of the entire state’s online total.
The competitive landscape remains stratified, with FanDuel as the clear number two, posting $12.3 million in revenue from $121.6 million in wagers. BetMGM and Fanatics Sportsbook were in a distant tie for third place, both generating $4.4 million in revenue for the month.
Stable Performance from Land-Based Casinos
The state’s three land-based casinos delivered a stable performance in July, with combined gross gaming revenue reaching $99.5 million, which was flat compared to the same month last year.
Encore Boston Harbor led the market with $60.2 million in revenue, followed by MGM Springfield at $24.0 million and Plainridge Park Casino with $15.3 million (from slots only). In total, the state collected $38.1 million in taxes from casino and sports betting activities during the month.
