Michigan’s online gambling sector hit a new all-time record in May, generating $301.4 million in total revenue. This marks a significant 26% increase year-on-year, showcasing robust growth across both iGaming and mobile sports betting markets.
May’s gross receipts surpassed the previous high, set in March this year, by 15.8%. Adjusted gross receipts, after promotional spending, also set a new state record at $271.8 million, up 31.4% from May 2024.
iGaming Dominates With Over $250 Million
Online slots and table games were the primary revenue drivers in May. iGaming gross receipts reached $251.5 million, a 26.6% increase year-on-year. Adjusted gross receipts for this segment climbed to $236.2 million, up 31.9% from the previous year.
FanDuel and MotorCity Casino led the iGaming sector with $67.6 million in gross receipts and $63.5 million in adjusted receipts. BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit followed closely with $64.9 million in gross receipts and $61 million in adjusted receipts. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community completed the top three, reporting $42.5 million in gross receipts and $40 million in adjusted receipts.
iGaming tax payments for the month contributed $49.1 million to the state. Detroit received an additional $12.7 million from commercial operators, and tribal operators paid $5.8 million to their respective governing bodies.
Sports Betting Sees Strong Gains
Sports betting also delivered positive results in May. Gross receipts for the segment were up 19.3% year-on-year, reaching $50 million. Adjusted receipts rose 27.7% to $35.6 million, supported by a 12.3% increase in total handle to $386.1 million. The statewide hold for May stood at 12.95% (gross receipts) and 6.41% (adjusted gross receipts).
FanDuel and MotorCity Casino maintained a strong lead in the online sports betting market, with $22.6 million in gross receipts from a $139.5 million handle, yielding a 16.2% hold. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community secured second place with $12.5 million from a $108.2 million handle (11.55% hold). BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit rounded out the top three, reporting $7.4 million in gross receipts from a $54.7 million handle (13.73% hold).
State tax payments from sports betting reached $2 million, with Detroit receiving an additional $651,441.
Detroit Land-Based Casinos Solidify Position
Detroit’s three commercial casinos reported a collective revenue of $114 million in May, a slight 0.4% increase year-on-year. Of this total, table games and slots generated $112.7 million, with the remaining $1.3 million attributed to retail sports betting. MGM Grand Detroit held the largest market share at 47%, followed by MotorCity Casino at 30% and Hollywood Casino at Greektown at 23%.
These casinos contributed $9.1 million in state gaming taxes and $13.4 million to Detroit for casino activity. Additionally, they paid $48,431 in state retail sports betting tax and $59,193 to Detroit.
Overall, Michigan’s gambling market demonstrated robust growth in May 2025. The record-setting online revenue, particularly from iGaming, underscores the sector’s increasing dominance and its significant contribution to state and local tax revenues.
