Ontario’s regulated online gambling market has continued its impressive growth trajectory, posting gross gaming revenue ( GGR) of CA$311 million (US$226m) for the month of July. According to the latest data from iGaming Ontario, this represents a strong 29% increase compared to the same period last year.
Total wagers placed across all licensed platforms also saw healthy growth, rising by 24% year-on-year to reach CA$7.56 billion. The results show a stable and mature market that continues to deliver consistent growth, cementing its position as Canada’s most important iGaming jurisdiction.
The Dominance of the Online Casino
The data once again confirms the overwhelming dominance of the online casino vertical in Ontario. Of the CA$311 million in total revenue, a massive CA$252.3 million-or 81%-was generated by online casino games, including slots and table games.
This trend was also reflected in player spending. Of the CA$7.56 billion wagered during the month, CA$6.74 billion (89%) was staked on online casino products. In contrast, online sports betting accounted for CA$52.7 million (17%) of the revenue from a handle of $688 million. Online poker made up the remainder, generating $5.9 million in revenue.
Player Metrics
The report from iGaming Ontario also provided insights into player activity. The number of active player accounts in July stood at 948,000. While this was a slight 6% dip from June, the average revenue per active player account increased by 8% month-on-month to $328, indicating strong monetisation of the existing player base.
Having launched its open, competitive market in April 2022, Ontario has firmly established itself as a key benchmark for regulated online gaming in North America. The July figures demonstrate a stable market with predictable growth, underpinned by the immense and sustained popularity of its online casino vertical.
