ARPU (Average Revenue Per User)

Average Revenue Per User

Definition

Net or gross revenue divided by active player count over a period. Used to benchmark monetization efficiency and market quality.

Why it matters

ARPU is the headline efficiency metric on the demand side of operator economics. It captures how much revenue the business extracts from each engaged player, and movements in ARPU usually signal something structural: a shift in customer mix toward higher or lower spenders, a change in product offer, a regulatory intervention on bonuses or stake limits, or a market-wide shift in player behavior. Operators report ARPU both at the group level and segmented by vertical (casino vs sportsbook), by acquisition channel, and by tier (mass vs VIP).

ARPU comparisons across markets reveal a lot about regulatory and competitive dynamics. Regulated markets with intrusive responsible gambling controls tend to show lower ARPU than less-regulated markets, which is a regular point of industry advocacy when operators argue against further restrictions. ARPU declines following affordability check rollouts are often cited as evidence that interventions push players offshore or reduce engagement disproportionately at the top of the spend distribution.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is ARPU calculated on GGR or NGR?

Operators disclose both. Net ARPU (on NGR) is the cleaner monetization read because it nets bonus spend, but Gross ARPU (on GGR) is more comparable across operators with different bonus strategies. Earnings releases typically include both.

  • How does ARPU differ from LTV?

ARPU is a snapshot of revenue per active player in a defined period. LTV is the projected total revenue across the full duration of a player's relationship with the operator. ARPU rolls forward into LTV through retention assumptions.
