A deposit, step by step
A customer at a crypto-native casino clicks deposit, chooses an asset and a network, and is shown an address. They send the asset from their own wallet or from an exchange. The transaction is broadcast to the network, included in a block, and after a number of confirmations the casino credits the balance. The whole process takes from seconds to an hour depending on the chain, costs the customer a network fee that ranges from fractions of a cent to tens of dollars depending on the chain and the moment, and involves no bank, no card scheme and no payment processor unless the customer bought the crypto for the purpose.
Everything that is different about crypto casino payments follows from that description: the operator controls the receiving address, the network is public, the fee is set by congestion rather than by a scheme, and the customer's side of the transaction is whatever wallet they chose to use.
Custody: who holds what
A crypto-native casino is custodial. The customer's deposit goes to an address the operator controls, and the customer's balance is an entry in the operator's database, exactly as at a regulated casino. The customer does not hold the funds while playing; the operator does. The word "crypto" makes some customers assume otherwise, and the segment has had its share of operators that vanished with the balances.
The operator's custody arrangements are therefore the first thing to understand about any platform. The standard architecture is hot wallets, connected to the platform and holding enough to pay withdrawals, fed from cold storage that holds the bulk of customer funds offline. The hot wallet is the target of every attack on a crypto casino, and several large platforms have lost tens of millions of dollars to compromised hot-wallet keys. A regulated operator holds customer funds in segregated bank accounts subject to a regulator's rules; a crypto casino's equivalent is a key-management policy that nobody outside the company audits unless its licence requires it, and most do not.
On-chain casinos are the exception: the smart contract holds the funds, the customer's stake and the house bankroll sit in code that anyone can read, and the operator cannot run off with them, though the contract can have bugs that let someone else.
The assets
Bitcoin was the original casino currency and is still accepted everywhere, but it is slow, expensive to move at busy times and volatile, so it has become a deposit asset more than a playing balance.
Ethereum and the tokens on it, and the faster chains built alongside it (Tron, Solana, BNB Chain, Polygon and others), carry most of the traffic, because they are quick and cheap and because the stablecoins run on them.
Stablecoins, dollar-pegged tokens issued against reserves, are what most balances are now held in. USDT on Tron is the workhorse of the segment: near-instant, fees of a few cents, and a dollar that behaves like a dollar. The issuer can freeze tokens at specific addresses and has done so at the request of law enforcement, which is the single largest change in the segment's exposure to authority in five years.
Everything else. Casinos list dozens of smaller coins because their customers hold them. Each is a small liquidity and volatility problem; most are converted to a stablecoin balance on deposit.
An operator that holds customer balances in a volatile asset carries the price risk on its own book unless it hedges, and the treasury function at a large crypto casino is closer to a trading desk than to a cashier.
On-ramps and off-ramps
Most customers do not hold crypto before they want to gamble with it. The on-ramp, buying crypto with a card or a bank transfer, is therefore part of the product, and casinos embed third-party on-ramp providers that sell the customer the stablecoin and send it to the casino's address in one flow. Those providers are regulated money-service businesses in most jurisdictions, they perform identity verification, and they decline gambling-adjacent transactions at rates comparable to card acquirers. The on-ramp is where the crypto casino meets the same payments friction as everyone else, and where its customers' identities most often become knowable.
Off-ramps, converting winnings back to fiat, are the customer's problem, usually solved through an exchange, which is also regulated and also asks who they are. A customer who deposits through a regulated on-ramp and withdraws to a regulated exchange has left an identity at both ends of a supposedly anonymous transaction.
Chain choice and fees
Which network a casino supports is a commercial and a compliance decision. Fast, cheap chains keep customers; chains with strong analytics coverage and issuer freeze powers keep regulators calmer; chains associated with laundering (privacy coins, or networks with weak analytics) attract the customers a casino does not want and the attention it does not need. Most large platforms have dropped privacy-focused coins for that reason.
Fees are paid by the customer on deposit and, usually, by the operator on withdrawal, which makes withdrawal fees a cost line that scales with volume and spikes when a network is congested. Platforms batch withdrawals and route to the cheapest chain to manage it.
Payouts
Withdrawals are where the crypto casino's speed is the product. A regulated operator's withdrawal can take days, gated by verification, fraud review and the banking system; a crypto casino's can take minutes, because the operator sends tokens to the address the customer gives. Speed is also the risk: an operator that pays out in minutes has minutes to catch a stolen deposit, a bonus-abuse ring or a laundering pattern, and the controls that do so (withdrawal holds above thresholds, address screening, velocity checks) are the ones that slow the product down. The tension between fast payouts and financial-crime controls is the segment's central operational problem, and lesson five returns to it.
The regulated operator's version
A licensed casino that adds crypto does almost none of the above itself. A payment provider gives the customer an address, receives the crypto, converts it to fiat at a quoted rate and settles fiat to the operator; withdrawals run in reverse. The operator never holds a token, its balance sheet stays in fiat, and its regulator sees a payment method with a provider that is licensed as a money-service business. The customer gets a faster deposit and, where the regulator permits, a crypto withdrawal to a verified wallet. This model is what "crypto" means in a regulated market, and it is the one suppliers, regulators and licensed operators are actually building toward.
What to take from this lesson
A crypto-native casino is custodial: it controls the address, holds the balance and carries the hot-wallet risk. Stablecoins on fast chains carry most of the volume and have brought the segment one step from the banking system rather than outside it. On-ramps and off-ramps are regulated and leave identities at both ends. Fast payouts are the product and the risk. The regulated version outsources all of it to a licensed payment provider and never touches a token.
