Hit Frequency
Definition
The proportion of spins or rounds that produce any win, distinct from how much those wins pay. A core measure of a game's felt volatility.
Why it matters
Hit frequency describes how often something happens, not how much it pays. A slot with 25% hit frequency returns a win on roughly one spin in four, though many of those wins may be smaller than the stake. It is independent of return to player: two games can share a 96% return while feeling completely different, one paying small amounts constantly and the other paying rarely but heavily.
The distinction matters for both design and player understanding. High hit frequency with low average win produces a grinding, low-volatility experience suited to longer sessions and smaller bankrolls; low hit frequency with large potential wins produces the high-volatility profile that dominates modern slot marketing. Operators use the mix deliberately across a lobby to serve different player types, and analysts reading game performance data treat hit frequency, volatility and return to player as three separate levers rather than one.
