Bancontact

Bancontact is the electronic payments company behind Belgium's domestic payment brand, whose network dates back to 1979. Over its history it introduced the Proton electronic wallet in 1995 and mobile QR code payments in 2014, and it reports more than 2.5 billion transactions a year. In 2026 it brought its activities under a single Bancontact brand, which now covers Bancontact Pay for mobile payments through its own app or a consumer's banking app, the Bancontact debit card for online and in store payments, a one click option for cards already registered with a merchant, and Bancontact Pro, a portal and set of tools for businesses. Bancontact Pro lets merchants accept both Bancontact and Wero. The company presents itself as a local Belgian actor operating a retail payment scheme within the European payments landscape.
