Prop Bet (Proposition Bet)
Proposition Bet
Definition
A wager on an occurrence within a sporting event rather than its result, such as how many points a named player scores. Player props concern one individual; game props concern the match as a whole.
Why it matters
Props are commercially valuable because they extend betting across the whole of a match rather than concentrating it on the final score, and they are the natural home of in-play and micro-betting. They are also the single most contested product in sports betting integrity.
The reason is arithmetic. Influencing a result usually requires several participants; influencing whether one player records one statistic may require only that player, and in some cases only that they underperform. Wherever betting corruption has surfaced in recent years, player props have been close to the centre of it. Several American states have restricted or banned props on college athletes, players unions have pressed for wider prohibitions on in-game performance markets, and regulators have examined whether props on named individuals should exist at all.
The secondary harm is directed at the athlete. Players report abuse from bettors whose prop failed, which is a welfare problem distinct from match fixing and one leagues have found harder to answer.
The bottom line
Props are where sports betting is most profitable and most fragile. The smaller the number of people who can move the outcome, the harder the product is to defend.
