In-Play Betting

Definition

Sports betting on events while the event is in progress, with odds updated in real time. The dominant share of sportsbook turnover in most mature markets.

Why it matters

In-play (also called live betting) is the dominant share of sportsbook turnover in most mature markets, often 60% to 80% of total handle. The product is a fundamentally different proposition from pre-match betting: faster pacing, narrower margins per market but wider total exposure, and significantly higher technical and trading complexity. Latency in the data feed and bet placement systems directly affects competitive position.

The technical and trading infrastructure required for in-play at scale is the most demanding part of sportsbook operations. Pricing models must update in real time based on game state; the trading team manages exposure across thousands of concurrent markets; the bet acceptance flow has to handle bet timing, score changes, and rapid market closing. The major sportsbook platform providers compete on in-play depth, latency, and breadth of markets, and operator differentiation in mature markets is increasingly built on in-play product quality rather than pre-match pricing.

Frequently asked questions

  • Are in-play margins higher or lower than pre-match?

Slightly higher on a per-market basis, reflecting the additional trading complexity and the wider pricing the operator can sustain on rapidly-changing in-play markets. Total in-play GGR is much higher because turnover is much higher.

  • What's the technical barrier to in-play?

Data feed latency (delivering scores and game state in milliseconds), pricing model speed (updating prices fast enough to stay accurate), and bet acceptance logic (deciding which bets to take and which to reject given state changes). All three are demanding at scale.
