Two design questions follow.
How much anticipation is honest? The distinction drawn in the Game Studio course applies. Building tension towards a disclosure is legitimate. Constructing a reveal that implies proximity to a prize the outcome never contained is a manufactured near miss, and in instant products it is easy to build because the reveal is entirely under the designer's control. A card that shows two matching symbols and a third that just misses, where the outcome was predetermined as a loss, is presenting a near miss that did not exist in any meaningful sense.
Does the player understand the outcome was fixed? The interaction implies agency. Choosing which panel to reveal first, or how to scratch, suggests influence. There is none, and whether players understand that varies.
Honest design would make clear that the result is determined at purchase, avoid reveal sequences implying proximity that the mathematics did not contain, and avoid interactions suggesting the player is affecting anything.
The risk profile
The point made in the first lesson, developed properly.
The design factors associated with elevated gambling risk were set out in the Product Innovation course: event frequency, interval between stake and outcome, continuity of play, and whether losses are presented as wins.
Applied to instant win products.
Event frequency is very high. A player can purchase and reveal many products in a few minutes.
Interval between stake and outcome is a few seconds at most.
