Cashless Gaming

Cashless gaming has been one of the largest operational transformations in the US land-based casino sector. The rollout enables players to fund slot and table play through a digital wallet (often loaded via card, ACH, or in-property kiosks) rather than handling physical cash, vouchers, or chips. Benefits include reduced cash handling cost, better data on player behavior, faster transaction speed, and AML benefits from tracking funds flow. Regulator approval, AGA advocacy, and supplier investment all aligned during the COVID period when cashless was framed as both a hygiene and modernization imperative. Major land-based properties in Nevada, New Jersey, and tribal jurisdictions have implemented or piloted cashless systems. Adoption has been steady rather than explosive because of player demographics (older players often prefer cash), regulatory complexity around responsible gambling triggers on instant top-up, and the cost of upgrading floor infrastructure.
