Online Casino Continues to Lead Market Growth in Denmark, Revenue Soars

Online casino gambling continues its trajectory of strong growth and remains the leading sector in Denmark's gambling market, according to the latest figures
Online casino gambling continues its trajectory of strong growth and remains the leading sector in Denmark’s gambling market, according to the latest figures released by the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden. The report highlights a significant increase in online casino revenue for March 2025 and underscores ongoing shifts in player behaviour towards mobile platforms and away from traditional land-based venues.
Spillemyndigheden reported a 6.5% increase in online casino revenue for March 2025. The sector generated DKK 330 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the month, compared to DKK 310 million in the same period of 2024. This performance positioned online casino as the dominant vertical, representing almost 50% of the total DKK 635 million GGR generated across all gambling activities in Denmark for March 2025. Overall, total gambling expenditure in March displayed a modest uptick of 1.4%.
Shift Towards Mobile and Decline in Land-Based
The latest monthly report from the Danish Gambling Authority also revealed a marked shift in consumer behaviour within the online segment towards mobile play. The ratio of online gaming conducted on mobile devices increased from 60% mobile versus 40% on other platforms in March 2024, to a significant 68% mobile versus 32% on other platforms in March 2025.
Conversely, the report indicated a continued trend of players moving away from land-based gambling activities. Revenue declined for both gaming machines, which generated DKK 97 million in March 2025 (down from DKK 106 million in March 2024), and land-based casinos, which saw revenue fall to DKK 27 million (down from DKK 28 million in March 2024). Gaming machines were notably the only major vertical to record a year-on-year decline in GGR in the 2024 annual report as well.
Introduction of Commercial Bingo
The report also provided an update on commercial bingo services, which were introduced under Denmark’s expanded regulatory framework effective from January 1, 2024, allowing licensed operators to offer this vertical. Revenue for the sector was included in the report for the first time, showing a total of DKK 7 million GGR generated in its initial three months of operation.
Annual Report Highlights 2024 Performance
Earlier, the Danish Gambling Authority published its annual report, “The Gambling Market in Numbers 2024,” which presents comprehensive performance data for the country’s regulated gambling industry for the previous calendar year. The report showed that total gambling expenditure in 2024 reached DKK 11 billion (approximately £1.26 billion), marking a 5.6% increase on the previous year (2023).
Reinforcing the trend seen in the monthly data, online casino accounted for nearly half of the total DKK 7.27 billion GGR reported across all verticals for 2024. The annual report also highlighted Denmark’s strong performance in capturing gambling activity within the regulated market. The channelisation rate increased to 91.5% in 2024, up 0.7% from 2023, indicating that a growing share of gambling activity is taking place via licensed operators. Denmark now ranks fifth globally in terms of regulated online gambling market share. The annual report also included a review of the country’s responsible gambling measures, such as the ROFUS self-exclusion system and the StopSpillet helpline.
In summary, the latest report from Spillemyndigheden confirms the sustained strong performance of the online casino sector as the primary driver of growth in the Danish gambling market. The data underscores a clear shift in player preferences towards mobile online gaming while traditional land-based sectors continue to decline. The annual report for 2024 further solidifies online casino’s market dominance, highlights high channelisation rates, and affirms Denmark’s position as a leading global market for regulated online gambling.
