Alberta is the second Canadian province to open a competitive online gambling market, and it did so on 13 July 2026, when more than 20 operator sites launched simultaneously. Before that, the only legal option was AGLC's own PlayAlberta, competing against a large grey market of internationally licensed sites. The structure copies Ontario deliberately. The iGaming Alberta Act, introduced as Bill 48 and given royal assent on 12 May 2025, created the Alberta iGaming Corporation as a Crown corporation to conduct and manage the market, with Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis as the regulator. That separation of the conduct-and-manage body from the regulator is the arrangement Ontario adopted to satisfy the Criminal Code requirement that a province conduct and manage its own gaming. AGLC opened registration on 13 January 2026 and close to 50 operators pursued licences, including FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars and bet365. Launching more than 20 sites on a single day is a deliberate choice to open at scale rather than to phase entrants in, which front-loads competition and marketing spend. It also gives Canada a second data point on whether the Ontario conduct-and-manage structure transfers cleanly to another province.
AGLC is the regulator; the Alberta iGaming Corporation is the separate Crown corporation that conducts and manages the market. The two are routinely conflated.
iGaming Alberta Act
The measure of success here is channelisation: whether Alberta pulls players off internationally licensed sites the way Ontario did. The first full year of reporting after the July 2026 launch is the first real evidence.
Ontario and Alberta, the only two provinces with open markets, will argue alongside Flutter, GGPoker's parent and the Canadian Gaming Association that pooling poker and fantasy players with other jurisdictions is lawful under the Criminal Code. Four Crown lottery corporations say it is Ontario conducting gaming outside Ontario. Every other province's monopoly turns on the answer.
A University of Toronto and ICES study of 14 years of hospital records finds visits 154% above the expected level among males aged 10 to 29 and 116% above among men aged 30 to 44, with no change in females. The authors call it a caution for Alberta and every province considering private online operators.
An Instagram ad showed the Bayern Munich defender's father arrested over a vault of cash, cleared, and then urging viewers to play the same casino, with an AI Drake for good measure. The link went to a Comoros-licensed site two months after Alberta opened a regulated market that bans athletes from casino ads altogether.
Ontario wants to open its poker and daily fantasy sports markets to players across borders. Four lottery corporations say that would break the law. Canada's Supreme Court will now decide who is right.
