Danske Spil

Danske Spil is the Danish state gambling operator, founded in 1948 and based at Brøndbyvester outside Copenhagen. It is structured to sit on both sides of the Danish market at once. Danske Lotteri Spil holds the commercial lottery monopoly, and is the only company in Denmark permitted to offer pure games of chance other than casino games. Danske Licens Spil competes for online gambling and sports betting under a Spillemyndigheden licence alongside private operators, in the market Denmark liberalised in 2012. That split is the cleanest expression of the Nordic compromise: keep the lottery in state hands where the argument for exclusivity is strongest, and let betting and casino compete under licence.
