Jenningsbet is one of the largest independent retail bookmakers in Britain, with a lineage running back to 1961, when off-course betting was first legalised and Joe Jennings went into business with his father Tom. The present company traces to a 1995 demerger, after which Greg and Julian Knight continued the retail business as Jennings Racing with ten shops in Essex. It now operates more than 100 betting shops around the United Kingdom and launched online in 2007. As an independent chain it occupies the part of the British market squeezed hardest between the listed multiples and the online-only operators, and it has been among the more vocal independents on machine regulation, affordability checks and the cost of compliance for smaller estates.

Flutter has put a number on the retail review it declined to quantify in August. Up to 100 of 506 shops go before the end of the year, with about 400 jobs at risk, and the company names the Budget.
