UK Tote Group

UK Tote Group operates the Tote, the pool betting operator for British horseracing since 1928. The business was owned by the government until July 2011, when it was sold to Betfred for 265 million pounds, and was bought by UK Tote Group, formerly named Alizeti, for 115 million pounds in October 2019. It is headquartered in Wigan with an additional office in central London, and its products include the Placepot and the Scoop6 alongside single and multi-leg pool bets on racing. Pool betting is structurally different from fixed odds: customers bet against each other into a pool rather than against a bookmaker's book, which makes liquidity rather than margin the central commercial problem, and has shaped the group's push to combine its pools with international ones.
