Sportsbet is the largest online bookmaker in Australia, headquartered in Melbourne. It was founded in Darwin in May 1993 as the country's first licensed bookmaker, taking advantage of the Northern Territory licensing regime that still underpins most Australian corporate wagering. Matthew Tripp bought the business for 250,000 Australian dollars in 2005 and turned an eight-person operation into the market leader through heavy marketing and product development, a template much of the Australian industry followed afterwards. Flutter Entertainment has owned it since February 2016, and it is one of the group's largest businesses outside the United States and the United Kingdom.
