Loterj is the state lottery of Rio de Janeiro, which in 2023 began licensing online sports betting operators under state authority ahead of Brazil's federal regime and sought to permit its licensees to accept bets nationwide, a claim rejected by the Supreme Federal Court in 2025, which confined state lottery authorisations to bets placed within the state. It continues to run state lottery products and to license betting operators for Rio de Janeiro residents alongside the federal system.
Corinthians' shirt sponsor has told the club that Brazil's provisional measure banning betting makes their R$150 million a year contract impossible to perform. The club says the deal is suspended, not over, and that a fine is due if the bookmaker walks away.
Brazil's betting ban does not stop at the federal licences: it also ends the fixed-odds licences issued by the states, and Rio de Janeiro's lottery says it will comply. Football, which took more than R$1 billion from betting sponsors last year, meets the Sports Ministry in Brasília on Tuesday.
